A long journey from the United States but for 17 year old Michael Landers and 18 year old Peter Li; however, the visit to China is proving most worthwhile.
Additionally, to competing in the Chengdu Junior and Cadet Open, both have been attending training sessions in China.
Both would be seemingly reaping the benefits.
In the Junior Boys’ Singles, the two booked places in the main draw after securing second positions in the group stage of proceedings on Saturday 3rd August 2011.
First Encounter
“I had never played him before, his services were difficult to read”, said Peter Li after his win against Lam Siu Hang. “I was nervous at the beginning but after losing the first game I told myself to concentrate and then I would have a chance.”
It was a confidence boosting win for the American teenager who comes from a totally different table tennis background than his Chinese adversaries in Chengdu.
Followed Father’s Footsteps
“My father played, he had a great passion for table tennis, I used to go to watch him play and that’s how I fell in love with the sport”, added Peter Li. “In America we don’t have a regular training schedule or organisation; we just call a coach and make an appointment.”
China is very different!
Regular Visitor
“Every year I come to China to be exposed to tougher and more professional training”, concluded Peter Li. “I am trying to improve my skills in order to qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games.”
