How to Backhand Chop

with Coach Qingliang Wang

from Maryland Table Tennis Center/HW Global Foundation

The backhand chop is a basic table tennis skill for choppers

Form and Movement
  • Start low in neutral stance
  • When chopping, the non-playing hand side should be higher than the playing-hand side (shoulder, hip & knee)
  • Racket should be held above elbow-level
  • During the chopping action, transfer your energy by shifting your weight from one leg to the other as opposed to twisting at the waist
  • Keep your weight low at all times
Footwork
For right-handers:
  • Standing position should be left leg behind and right leg in front
  • Right leg will be crucial for moving in while the left leg is important for moving out

For left-handers: vice-versa
Chopping Against Powerful Loops
  •  Dissipate power by making strokes shorter and adding light spin
  • Make earlier ball contact
Chopping Against Spinny Loops
  • Choppers tend to struggle more with this
  • Chop downwards with a lot of spin and follow through after ball contact
  • Bending down at the same time as chopping can help with ball control
Chopping Against Soft Loops or No-Spin Balls
  • Create more power by making strokes larger and stepping forward more
  • Do not add too much spin as it can reduce the power of your chop
