How to Care for Your JOOLA Ping Pong Table

Congrats! You have welcomed a ping pong table into your home. To ensure that your table stays in optimal condition for you and yours to enjoy for a long time to come, table care is important. Aside from aesthetics, a dirty table can start to affect the way your table plays. As dirt and grime builds, the table gets stickier. As a result, the ball begins to lose spin and bounce. Essentially, it becomes a slow table. Even worse, all that nastiness transfers to your paddle, robbing it of its tackiness and performance.

The good news is, it is extremely easy to keep your table tennis table in competition ready condition. Maintaining your ping pong table boils down to these 3 things:

First, almost by rule, the ball will hit the ground a few dozen times during a match. Each miss brings a few particles of dirt back with it. The easiest way to keep your table clean is to give it a quick wipe after each use and keep it covered when not in use. This is just a simple dry wipe with a gentle cloth. If you keep your table in a clean space and it stays under a cover, it really is just that easy.

Keep an eye on your paddle’s rubber and inspect your surface regularly. If you start to notice a little more dirt than normal, it might be time to give your table tennis table a gentle scrubbing. It is important to remember, most ping pong tables are made of wood. Wood absorbs water, and not in a good way. Don’t drench your table in water or use any harsh chemicals, including rubbing alcohol. Instead, a damp (water) cloth can work for light dirt or spot cleaning. If you need to attack built up grime or a tougher blemish, check out our JOOLA Table Tennis Cleaner. Our team in Germany has formulated the perfect cleanser that cuts through grime, but is also gentle enough for regular use. If you’re looking for a more convenient option, we recommend the JOOLA Table Tennis Table Surface Cleaning Wipes. A few tips for scrubbing your ping pong table:
  • Be gentle: Avoid chemicals, Brillo pads, or too much elbow grease
  • Don’t go overboard: Don’t use too much water and always wipe dry immediately
  • Test: Choose a less conspicuous spot to try any cleaner first

Few of us have the special privilege of playing table tennis all day, everyday. Therefore, your table will have to spend some time in storage. The 3 things to avoid when deciding where to store your indoor ping pong table are:

  • Moisture
  • Direct Sunlight
  • Dirt and Dust

Instead, look for a spot that has most, if not all of these features:

  • Temperature controlled or not subject to temperature swings
  • No direct sun
  • Well-ventilated
  • Low humidity and moisture free

Some good places to store your ping pong table include finished basements, garages in moderate climates, insulated sheds, or the main areas of your home or business. It is also a good idea to keep the humidity in check by changing your air filter, covering houseplant soil, and in some cases using a dehumidifier.

Examples of bad places to keep a ping pong table would be a laundry room, a garage that gets hot in the day or freezing at night, near pipes that generate condensation, or any outdoor spot without a durable cover.

The best advice we’ve heard comes from one of our German table makers who likes to say “If it is an awful place to play, it is a horrible place to put a table.”

Our outdoor table tennis usually feature an aluminum-plastic composite table surface that’s weatherproof and resistant to warping. However, we still recommend storing these tables in areas that do not experience extreme day/night temperature changes or direct sunlight.

Additionally, the easiest and the best thing you can do for your ping pong table is use a cover. Here at JOOLA HQ we play daily, but even we take the time to cover up the table each night. All the cleaning in the world doesn’t matter much if every time you go to play there is a fresh coat of dust waiting for you.

There are basically 2 ways to categorize table tennis table covers – indoor/outdoor or the fit. An indoor ping pong table cover is less expensive and will protect against dirt and dust. An outdoor ping pong table cover is made of a much sturdier material that is waterproof and protects against UV light. In regard to fit, most covers only fit tables that are in the folded position.

With close to 70 years of experience making table tennis tables, we’ve engineered 2 covers that are both affordable and dependable. Each of our covers are dual functioning, they can cover your table in both the folded and playing position.

  1. JOOLA Dual Function Indoor Table Cover:  The less expensive option – It will get the job done when it comes to keeping your indoor table tennis table dirt and dust free. For tables kept outdoors or on patios, consider option 2.
  2. The JOOLA Dual Function Waterproof Table Cover: It addition to being waterproof, it utilizes a PVC material to protect your ping pong table from UV light. This is the armor your table needs to withstand the elements.

Our covers are not the only thing we sell that can help you maintain your ping pong table. We asked our customer care team for their top product suggestions to keep a clean table:

  1. JOOLA Magnetic Rubberized Ball Holder Set: No need to pick up a ball off the floor when you always have a fresh one on hand! This helps to keep your table surface grime-free for longer.
  2. iPONG Carbon Fiber Table Tennis Ball Catch Net: Practicing alone doesn’t have to mean collecting a hundred balls off the floor. Keep them clean and ready for continuous play!

Buying a ping pong table is an investment in your health, happiness, and how you utilize your space. Putting just a little time and effort into maintaining your ping pong table will pay dividends in both the life of the table and the quality of play
