Players who play well in the clutch and fight for every point have a definite advantage. For those who don’t compete as well, and would like to, it can be helpful to understand what that attitude feels like for the person doing it.
Perhaps the best analogy is to a cartoon character who keeps getting beat up but is too dumb to stop coming back for more abuse at the hands of the animator. Like some kind of eternal optimist, the cartoon character doesn’t stop because this time, he believes, it will work out better. In a tough match, you need the same attitude. No matter what shot you just missed, what distractions you face, what lead you blew, how tired you feel, or anything else, you need a naive optimism that something good will happen if you persevere.
As often, it will.
