Movement (footwork), touch (short game, serve and return), consistency and power are the keys to any high-level game, and roughly in that order. Unfortunately, many players’ practice priorities are exactly backwards — they work most on big, powerful strokes, only somewhat on consistency, little on touch shots, and footwork drills are an afterthought at best.
There are no substitutes for the ability to move very quickly into good position, and a rock-solid short game. Without them, there is absolutely no way to become a high-level player. To embrace them (and the hard work they require) is to treat table tennis like a true sport, and to give yourself at least a shot at the top.
