5 Reasons Why 2020 is the Year to Take Up Table Tennis

by Matt Hetherington

The year 2020 has brought about some challenging times, and one of the biggest trials for sporting individuals is the lack of ability to access sports and exercise facilities. For that reason, table tennis has become increasingly popular as a great way to bring sport into your own home.

Across the globe, the demand for table tennis tables and equipment has been on the rise, as the ever-popular sport has seen a boost in appeal for those who are looking for their daily dose of fun and physical activity.

I spent 3 months in lockdown at home this year, and the table tennis table was my grail of sanity (granted I’m a complete addict to the sport).

So why is 2020 the time to bring table tennis into your home?

  1. Table Tennis is an excellent workout, you can burn hundreds of calories in an hour. It’s a great cardio workout – to many people’s surprise the first time they try it. Also, there are many benefits for brain health – with the quick reflexes, decision-making and fast-processing of sight and sound.
  2. In sporting comparisons, table tennis doesn’t require too much space. You can fit a table in your game room, garage, or even use a retractable net on your dining room table. Bringing a competitive sport into your home has never been easier. It’s also a good way to introduce young kids to the sport in a home environment. I managed to squeeze a table into my converted basement space without too much trouble. If you don’t have space and just want to play for fun, you can also try a mid-sized table.
  3. It can be played individually or with family and friends. No matter what your current situation is, you can play and enjoy the game. Whether it’s in the basement with an iPong training robot, or with your family at home for fun, table tennis can help you fill some social time in your day.
  4. Managing screen time has been a challenge for a lot of parents during these times, with computer gaming consuming a lot of their children’s time during the days – and now also many school classes being through online video mediums. Having a fun and engaging way to get away from the screen for breaks during the day within the home is always a good option.
  5. It’s a great non-contact and socially distanced sport to get involved in for the longer-term. Table Tennis clubs which have already begun opening have been able to establish very safe playing environments for those with health and safety concerns. It’s also a fun sport for the kids in future who may be less inclined to get involved in contact sports.
