APP Punta Gorda Open
The APP Tour started their 2024 season with the first event of the year in Punta Gorda, FL. With lots of rain in the forecast, the APP Punta Gorda matches saw some interesting new scoring formats. Additionally, the APP Tour recently eliminated their back draw and the chance of coming back around to the gold medal match after a loss.
Men's Doubles:
In the first doubles semifinal at the APP Punta Gorda Open, Rob Nunnery & Andrei Daescu faced off against Michael Loyd & Ryler Deheart in a close match that ended 11-7, 7-11, 11-9. The second semifinal saw Will Howells & CJ Klinger securing their spot in the final by defeating Yates Johnson & Hunter Johnson with scores of 11-9, 13-11.
The gold medal match witnessed Howells & Klinger dominating against Nunnery & Daescu, ultimately winning 11-1, with Nunnery withdrawing. In the bronze medal match, Loyd & DeHeart secured victory against Johnson & Johnson with scores of 11-9, 11-3.
Men's Singles:
In the first semifinal of the APP Punta Gorda Open, Chris Haworth and Yates Johnson engaged in a fierce battle, resulting in a nail-biting 16-14, 12-15, 15-13 victory for Haworth. The second semifinal featured Hunter Johnson facing Jack Foster, with Johnson emerging victorious with scores of 15-9, 9-15, 15-10.
The gold medal match showcased Haworth’s prowess as he faced Hunter Johnson, ultimately winning 15-9, 16-14. In the bronze medal match, Yates Johnson secured third place by defeating Jack Foster with scores of 15-11, 6-15, 15-11.
Mixed Doubles:
In the mixed doubles category, Jorja Johnson & Yates Johnson battled Bobbi Oshiro & Will Howells in a thrilling semifinal that ended 3-11, 11-7, 11-9. The second semifinal featured Megan Fudge & Andrei Daescu against Rob Nunnery & Susannah Barr, with Fudge & Daescu emerging victorious with scores of 8-11, 11-8, 11-0.
The gold medal match at APP Punta Gorda witnessed Johnson & Johnson’s success against Fudge & Daescu, securing victory with scores of 11-8, 11-7. In the bronze medal match, Oshiro & Howells claimed victory by forfeit as Nunnery withdrew.
Women's Doubles:
Next up at the APP Punta Gorda Open was the women’s doubles category. Bobbi Oshiro & Milan Rane faced Megan Fudge & Susannah Barr in a competitive semifinal, ultimately winning 4-11, 11-6, 11-9. The second semifinal featured Parris Todd & Borja Johnson against Allison Harris & Simone Jardim, with Todd & Johnson securing their spot in the final with scores of 11-9, 11-4.
The gold medal match saw Oshiro & Rane emerging victorious against Todd & Johnson with scores of 11-8, 12-10. In the bronze medal match, Harris & Jardim secured third place by defeating Fudge & Barr with scores of 11-8, 11-5.
Women's Singles:
In the women’s singles category at APP Punta Gorda, Megan Fudge faced Jess Warren in the first semifinal, winning with scores of 15-9, 15-13. The second semifinal featured Judit Castillo against Parris Todd, with Castillo securing her spot in the final with scores of 16-14, 13-15, 15-7.
The gold medal match showcased an intense battle between Judit Castillo and Megan Fudge, with Castillo emerging as the champion with scores of 15-13, 18-16. In the bronze medal match, Jess Warren claimed victory by forfeit as Todd withdrew.
