Why Table Tennis Clubs are the Nest of Our Sport
For many people, table tennis clubs are the gateway into the sport of table tennis. Most of us can remember vividly the first time we ever stepped through the doors of a club and were exposed to the real game of table tennis.
I started playing at the age of 8 at a small club a few minute’s walk from my house. I played with many retired pensioners and other young kids alike. It was challenging learning the sport, but many people were always offering their time to help when they saw people making a genuine effort to learn new skills.
For many dedicated players, the club represents a home away from home, a second family, a group of friends for life – all of the great things that table tennis embodies.
Inside the four walls of that club, we played the game we loved, built friendships, and learned how to play, to help, and to teach others.
The people who dedicate their time to running clubs and activities are among the most passionate advocates for the sport you will ever find. Most of the work they do is either as a volunteer, or for little remuneration, and can at times be a thankless job.
You will find inspirational characters, hear stories, learn from coaches and players alike, and become a part of a community.
Being part of that table tennis club helped me grow into this sport. When I had no practice partners, and for many years no coach, I was able to continue making the most of my surroundings and fuel my desire to keep improving.
Table tennis clubs will always have a special place in my heart. It is only fitting that during Thanksgiving, I express my deepest gratitude – not only to those who directly impacted my own table tennis career through the club systems, but to all those hard-working club owners, coaches, tournament and program directors, volunteers, supporters and players who make this sport what it is. You are the life blood of this sport!
